Educational Objectives

See some patients

Report to the Emergency Department each day of the course and report to the attending to whom you are assigned. For the first few patients, you may have to shadow the physician to see how they perform an assessment. When you and your attending feel comfortable, you may attempt a history and physical on your own. Pick a patient selected by the attending. This will likely be a patient who has already been evaluated.

Introduce yourself to the patient and family and let them know that you are here to learn how to evaluate patients. After your history and physical, take some time to organize your thoughts. When you’re ready present your patient to your attending. Bring a copy of the evaluation form (see below) during your presentation. They may want to fill it in while you present.

Write up the patient

Next you’ll want to write up your patient. Email this to your attending and they’ll give you feedback on your write-up. You need three of these write-ups to complete the course.

Ask your attending how they would like you to submit the history and physical. It can be done in a Word document or even via email (which I find easier). They should make comments and then return that to you. Forward this back to me as well.

Student Evaluations

You will be observed by attending physicians over a four-day period. The course will use the M3 core clerkship evaluation form. Each evaluator will be asked to complete the evaluation of the student at the end of each shift. Click here to download an evaluation form, print it and hand it to your attending prior to the end of the shift. You should have one of these for each of the attendings you work with over the four days you’re in the ER.

Collect the evals from the attending when they are done. Trust me, you’re more likely to get them done and handed in this way. Then hand all your completed forms in to the department secretary by the end of the week.

How did you feel at the end of the course

You will also write a brief reflection about their experiences in the course. This piece may include observations about patients, role models, or their own performance. Discuss your emotional response to the experiences of the course.

At the end of the course, it is your turn to evaluate us. Complete course evaluation online by visiting that link. It should take you less than 2 minutes, but this information is very helpful in improving the course for future students.
